A Few Words on the Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month each year. Its roots go back over two thousand years to Qu Yuan, a poet and statesman of ancient China who became a symbol of integrity and loyalty. The customs that grew from his memory - dragon boat races, zongzi rice dumplings, families gathering - have held on with remarkable staying power across Chinese society.

The Customs Worth Knowing

For those less familiar with Duanwu, the festival is best understood through what people actually do.

Zongzi are the food of the season. Glutinous rice packed with fillings - salted pork, egg yolk, red bean, jujube, depending on region and family preference - wrapped in bamboo leaves and steamed. They are made in batches, shared between households, and brought into the office. The wrapping itself is a skill passed down through families, and watching someone who knows how to do it properly is worth the time.

Dragon boat racing is the most visible tradition. Long narrow boats, crews of twenty or more, racing to a drum. What started as a communal act of grief became a competitive sport, now practiced internationally. The noise and energy of a race day are hard to describe to someone who has not been there.

Mugwort at the doorway is a quieter custom but a widespread one. Bunches of the aromatic herb are hung at the entrance of homes during the festival, an old practice tied to the belief that the fifth lunar month brings heat and illness. The smell is sharp and distinctive, and for many people it is simply the smell of the holiday.

Five-color braided bracelets are tied on children's wrists on the morning of the festival - red, yellow, blue, white, and black thread twisted together. They are worn until the first rainfall after Duanwu, then released into the water. It is a small, old custom that has stayed in practice across generations.
