Differences in Thread Standardization

The global thread standards are mainly divided into three major systems:

1.British Standard (55° Tapered Thread) – Follows the Whitworth thread specification.

2.American Standard (60° Tapered Thread) – Complies with NPT standards.

3.Metric Standard (Parallel Thread) – Adheres to national standards such as GB/T.

It is important to note that there are significant differences in thread parameters (such as thread angle, pitch, and taper) between different standards. Even if the appearance seems similar, imperial and American threads, or metric and non-standard threads, are not interchangeable. This is similar to how different types of power plugs may look alike but cannot be used interchangeably.

 

Differences in Thread Profile Characteristics

1.Tapered Thread Technical Features

● Taper Structure: Standard taper ratio of 1:16

● Sealing Principle: Achieves self-sealing through the compression of the conical surface when the threads mesh.

● Installation Requirements: Must be used with sealing tape or sealant.

● Application Scenarios: Oil pipelines, high-pressure steam systems, and other demanding conditions.

2.Parallel Thread Technical Features

● Parallel Structure: Thread axis remains completely parallel.

● Connection Method: Relies on end-face compression for sealing.

● Sealing Components: Requires the use of metal gaskets or rubber O-rings.

● Typical Applications: Water supply and drainage systems, low-pressure gas pipelines, etc.

When maintenance personnel mistakenly assemble tapered thread fittings with parallel thread joints, the threads may engage for 2-3 turns initially. However, as the taper difference becomes apparent, it will eventually lead to thread jamming or seal failure.
